About Ordinary Time
The season after Pentecost is the longest in the church year, lasting from Trinity Sunday (the First Sunday after Pentecost) until Advent. This season is also known as "Ordinary Time."
During the season after Pentecost, we use green hangings on the altar, and the priest's vestments are green, also. This part of the church year includes the feast of All Saints (November 1), which we celebrate on the following Sunday. All Saints' Sunday is one of the principal baptismal feast days, on which we will renew our baptismal vows and celebrate the sacrament of Holy Baptism if there are candidates for baptism.
The Epistle readings during this period of time are primarily from the first and second letters of Timothy, and the second letter to the Thessalonians. The Gospel readings are from Luke. The Old Testament lessons come from a variety of books in the Hebrew scriptures, selected to relate to the Gospel reading. Toward the end of Ordinary Time, we begin to hear prophesies applicable to Jesus and his coming.
Click on the dates below to find the readings assigned for the first Sunday after Labor Day through the end of Ordinary Time.
