Outreach at St. George's

The St. George’s Outreach Committee is currently coordinating several exciting programs.

We constantly seek to broaden participation in these and future programs to help fulfill our mission in the Body of Christ. If you would like to know more about or help with a specific program, contact the person in charge. To make a financial contribution, make your check payable to the St. George’s Outreach Committee; make a note on the memo line if you want your gift targeted to a specific program. Checks may be placed in the alms basin or sent to the church office. We guarantee financial faithfulness. Your prayers are always needed. Anyone is always welcome at Outreach meetings, the third Sunday of the month in Kleberg Hall after the 10:30 worship service (approximately 12 noon). You need not commit to regular attendance to be a valued member of this group. Contact Gayle Wall, committee chair, at 837-0644 if you have questions or would like more information.

Group Home
We are trying to provide interesting activities for the girls in a local foster home at least monthly. We also assist in special projects at Christmas, and back-to-school, summer, and school holiday activities. We need volunteers to go on the outings, donations of tickets or other in kind amusements, and proposals for activities. Contact Katie Carnes (w. 322-2540; h. 847-8789) or Sarah Campbell (419-1677).

Trinity Center
Trinity Center ministers to the needs of the homeless in downtown Austin. St. George’s is one of the local churches that assists with the weekly worship and meal program on Sunday afternoons. The remaining dates in 2009 for which St. George's will assist are August 9 and November 15. The contact person for the St. George’s help is Terry O'Donnell (833-0127).

Christopher House Baskets
St. George’s provides baskets of snacks and personal care items each week to families at Hospice Austin's Christopher House, a beautiful facility for people with a terminal illness. Anyone with a question about delivering a basket should check with Carolyn Moreau (330-0639). The semi-annual schedule is ongoing and is posted in Kleberg Hall, the church narthex, and on this website.

Food Bags
We provide a convenient assortment of shelf-stable food for the families served by Any Baby Can, a local charity that assists needy families with medically fragile or at-risk children. This program has been resumed at the request of Any Baby Can case workers; recipients have proven needs and do not receive this help from another agency. Contact Stephanie Savage (459-7679) for more information.

Sudanese Health Clinic
St. George’s Church and St. George's Day School have partnered to raise funds for the completion of the health clinic in the Northern Sudan village of Az-Zawrat through the Mother Maryam Foundation. The Mother Maryam Foundation was established by Awad Abdelgadir for the purpose of pursuing and supporting projects designed to improve the health and welfare of communities in economically disadvantaged areas of the world by helping people meet their needs for clean water, medical care, nutritious food, educational opportunities, and other basic needs. Last year, St. George’s raised $3,600 for lighting and ceiling fans for the clinic. The Episcopal Diocese of Texas awarded St. George’s a $3,000 World Mission matching grant for our outreach efforts on behalf of the Mother Maryam Foundation. Though the clinic is nearing completion, it cannot begin providing much needed medical care to the area’s residents until additional funds are raised. The big bulletin board in Kleberg Hall displays beautiful photographs of residents from Az-Zawrat who have medical needs and who can be “adopted” for $15. There are envelopes located in the narthex of the church on the table for donations that can be placed in the alms basin.

Casa Marianella
A shelter for homeless immigrants and refugees located at 821 Gunter in East Austin offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, clothing services, referral services, and case management. If you need someone to help you with moving, yard work, or other unskilled labor, consider hiring one of the clients of Casa Marianella. If you need domestic help, Casa has a women's work list. Clients will need transportation to your house or work destination but will more than likely be able to catch a bus home if a metro stop is close by. Be prepared to pay a fair hourly compensation of $8 - $10 per hour. This is one way individuals from St. George's can provide them with some extra income to meet their needs. Call the day before with your request. The phone number to request unskilled labor is 385-5571. Contact Jennifer Long, director of Casa Marianella, for general information at 653-7874, or visit their website.

Safe Place
A shelter for victims of domestic violence is a new addition to our list of programs. Look in the church entryways and Kleberg for the specially marked Safe Place containers used to collect the donations of unopened underwear for women and children; diapers, pull-ups, and socks for children (all sizes); unopened, unexpired personal care items; and gently used pillows and bedding for twin-sized beds in addition to the "freebies" (travel-sized toiletries) we collect. A complete list of needed items is available on Safe Place's website. Nancy Ricketts (327-3360) is coordinator for this project.
