St. Hildegard’s Community is a small worshiping community within St. George’s. Our weekly Eucharists (Rite 3) have been a way to reach out to those who long for more intimate, inclusive, creative worship with the beauty and drama of Anglican worship. We offer a supportive environment for seekers, those open to the wisdom of other sacred traditions and to exploring emerging Christian theology. We complement the traditional liturgies offered on Sunday morning. In some ways we are growing into a new kind of monastic community, multi-generational and with diverse opportunities for practicing commitment to a deeper spiritual life. A contemplative-active life in community shaped by our Vision and Commitments is our way of living into Baptism. The Associate Rector, The Rev. Judith Liro, is our priest and co-founder.

The Servant Leadership School

Working closely with St. Hildegard’s, The Servant Leadership School (SLS) offers deep leadership training within the parish and out to the wider church and community. Since its beginning in 1992, the School has offered Fall and Spring terms of ten weekly sessions, with one to four concurrent classes. Class evenings begin with a candlelit supper, and personal spiritual sharing in small groups at dinner. A brief worship and two-hour classes follow. Classes have been offered in numerous and varied topics over the years, e.g., Prayer, Vocation, Scripture, Theology, Ethics, Money, Non-violence and Community. Besides reading and responding intellectually participants write and share personal reflections, create art and explore movement in ways to fully engage body, heart, mind and spirit. The School’s communal formation process encourages each person to discover a deeper inner life, a personal way of bringing love into the world through creativity, working for justice, and sustaining honest relationships in community.

More About St. Hildegard's Community and the SLS

St. Hildegard's Community, born on The Feast of the Epiphany in 1996, grew out of a desire to support one another in a deeper spiritual life fully engaged with the world. We have tried to imagine and live out one possibility of a baptismal ecclesiology in conversation with emerging theologies, including feminist liberation theology. We foster a deep inner life personally and in community; we also promote significant ministries in the world and bring the joy and struggle of the world into the liturgy of the Church.

The VISION of St. Hildegard’s Community expresses a passionate call “to follow Jesus in compassion and the liberating discipline of the Spirit.” The Vision was written at the birth of the community and continues to unfold. The COMMITMENTS of the Community focus on five basic areas of spiritual formation: Quiet Time (including silence in the form of Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina and Meditation), Mindfulness, Call, Community, and Accountability. The Commitments grew out of the life of the Community and are a framework for ongoing spiritual growth and transformation.

From the beginning St. Hildegard’s has lived the questions:
How can we be deeply rooted in the Christian faith and yet open to the wisdom of other sacred traditions?
How can inclusive and expansive language about God and humanity and newly emerging theological understandings be incorporated into liturgy that is faithful to the Book of Common Prayer?
How can we creatively engage the liturgical year so that we are transformed personally and corporately, living more fully into our Baptism?
How can the historic priesthood be preserved and serve with laity in a collegial fashion, rather than a hierarchical one?
