Members of the Altar Guild are responsible for behind-the-scenes preparation and clean-up for all worship services at St. George's, which include two services each Sunday, all special days during the liturgical year, weddings, and funerals.
Duties include dusting the altar and other furnishings in the sanctuary, cleaning the Eucharistic vessels, setting out the wine and bread before each service, making sure the altar hanging is the right color for the seaon, and preparing the candles for use in the service. The Altar Guild also polishes the silver and brass used in worship and cares for the church linens, hangings, and vesments. Altar Guild members take a more visible role each year at the Maundy Thursday service, when the sanctuary is stripped of its adornments in preparation for Good Friday.
A roughly equal number of men and women serve on the Altar Guild at St. George's, and new members are welcome any time. Members generally serve one week per month in teams of two. Preparation takes place on Saturday; then one team member cleans up after the 8:00 a.m. service and the other cleans up after the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday. If you are interested in serving, please contact the head of the Altar Guild.
