Who We Are
|
|
In the year 2000, St. Georges celebrated 50 years of parish life and ministry. We were founded on the boundless enthusiasm of the Rt. Rev. John Hines, then a Bishop of Texas, later the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. Gathering a small group of Episcopalians on what was the very north edge the city in 1950, Bishop Hines arranged for the purchase and relocation (under the cover of night, in a dash across the main runway of Austins airport) of a surplus army chapel from Bastrops Camp Swift onto property newly purchased by the young congregation.
In the early days, St. Georges was served by such clergy as the Rev. Bill Brewster, simultaneously the founding headmaster of St. Stephens School, and the Rev. Malcolm Riker (on his way to founding 11 Episcopal Churches, a record surely never to be surpassed in the Diocese of Texas). As the parish grew, new ministries developed in St. Georges Day School, a pre-school that is currently experiencing a quantum leap in dynamism, and St. George's Court, a senior housing community in northeast Austin.
As we encounter the 21st century, the people of St. George's remain committed to ministries of outreach, hospitality, pastoral care, and other opportunities that call upon us to carry out our mission:
. . . to worship God together, share the Gospel, and serve God's children. |
