About Easter Season
The Easter season last 50 days--from the celebration of the Resurrection until the Day of Pentecost, when we celebrate the Holy Spirit's presence among us. It includes the Feast of the Ascension, when Jesus gave his promise to be with us "to the end of the age" and was taken into heaven.
We continue to sing Easter hymns and display the white hangings and Easter banners from our Easter Day celebration. At St. George's we are encouraged to stand, rather than kneel, for the Prayers of the People and for the Eucharist Prayer, as a symbol of the dignity of our life in the Risen Christ; and we omit the confession of sin in recognition that Jesus died for our sins, once for all, and gave us newness of life in his resurrection.
The Scripture readings during Easter season are about Jesus' risen life, his relationship with the community, and the earliest teachings and preaching of the young Church. The Old Testament lessons during Easter season are replaced with readings from the Acts of the Apostles, which remind us how to be a community of believers and the importance of our relationships with one another. The Gospel readings include powerful images of Jesus as the Good Shepherd, the true vine, and the Way to eternal life.
