MUSIC MINISTER

Part-Time Music Minister - St. George’s Episcopal Church, Austin, Texas

Under the leadership of the Rector, the Music Minister interacts with church staff, choir members, and congregants to lead the music ministry at St. George’s. Duties of the St. George’s Music Minister include:

· Playing organ and piano at worship services (including hymns, service music, prelude, postlude, and choral anthems)

· Directing the adult choir at the weekly 10:30 am Sunday worship service and feast days as required by the Rector

· Making music selections in advance of the worship services, including child-friendly selections made in conjunction with lay leaders

· Conducting weekly evening and Sunday morning choir rehearsals.

The Music Minister also is expected to:

· Facilitate congregational participation in the music and foster the talents of parishioners who may wish to offer their gift of music on occasion (with guitar, wind instrument, solo voice, etc.), including recruitment of new choir members

· Select, prepare, and rehearse congregational music and choral anthems, as well as a prelude and postlude for each Sunday or other major feast day or occasion celebrated at St. George’s

· Arrange for and conduct instrumentalists at Christmas and Easter or other occasions, as the budget allows

· Play at funerals and weddings held at St. George’s as available

· Arrange for organ and piano maintenance and repair

· Foster a sense of community among the choir, including regular communication and developing the talents of the members

· Ensure that St. George’s has copyright permissions for any printed or live-streamed music

· Select and order new music within the budget allowed

WE ARE LOOKING for someone with experience in choral conducting, who can play the organ and piano in an accomplished manner that facilitates congregational singing, conveys a sense of spirituality through the liturgical music, and gives the choir a wide range of anthems from which to sing. Creativity and the use of a variety of musical styles are encouraged. The music minister should be able to work independently, be self-motivated, start and end all rehearsals on time, and possess good interpersonal skills. Familiarity with the Episcopal liturgy is highly desirable.

ST. GEORGE’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH is a vibrant, dedicated, and participatory congregation that sings and appreciates a variety of music. We currently have a small but strong choir and an extensive choral collection. Instruments in the worship space include a baby grand piano and a virtual pipe organ system (with full organ console) using Hauptwerk virtual organ software that replicates the sound of the Armley Schulze organ at St. Bartholomew’s (Leeds, UK). Our principal hymn books are the Hymnal 1982 and Gather (2nd edition). St. George’s currently holds one service of Holy Eucharist Rite II with music on Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m.

Compensation: This is a one-quarter time position (10 hours per week). Salary commensurate with experience. The position offers great potential for growth, both personally and corporately.
